An artisinal cocktail book by two best friends and the entrepreneurs who invented the The Mason Shaker cocktail shaker and whose mission is to bring cocktail crafting out of the bar and into the home. Design, cocktail, and culinary enthusiasts Eric Prum and Josh Williams realized that while cocktail bars have sprouted up just about everywhere, good drinks still couldn't be found in the one place where they always mixed them: at home with friends. So, from their Brooklyn workshop, where they designed, created, and launched The Mason Shaker, a now-iconic invention that transformed a Mason jar into a cocktail shaker, they also created Shake. One part instructional recipe book and one part photo journey through their year of cocktail crafting, the book is a simple and inspirational expression of their seasonal, straightforward approach to drinks and entertaining: Mixing cocktails should be simple, social, and above all, fun. Each recipe is presented visually, in four color photos, as well as in written recipes, making Shake both an arresting gift and a practical guidebook to simple, elegant cocktails.

The story I am about to tell you takes place in the 1970's and 80's, during the good old days of shake block cutting. Technology, mainly the helicopter and the modern chainsaw, enabled us to harvest this valuable wood in ways and quantities that could only be imagined before this time. Shake block cutting still continues to this day, but only in a much more limited scope. I cut shake blocks during the glory days, during the days when the remoteness of the wood was suddenly no longer an obstacle. We rode our winged serpents to where no man had gone before. And we found the treasure. I was a shake block cutter and here is my story.

Shake Rattle and Roll Yugoslav Rock Music and the Poetics of Social Critique by Dalibor Mišina

From the late-1970s to the late-1980s rock music in Yugoslavia had an important social and political purpose of providing a popular cultural outlet for the unique forms of socio-cultural critique that engaged with the realities and problems of life in Yugoslav society. The three music movements that emerged in this period - New Wave, New Primitives, and New Partisans - employed the understanding of rock music as the 'music of commitment' (i.e. as socio-cultural praxis premised on committed social engagement) to articulate the critiques of the country's 'new socialist culture', with the purpose of helping to eliminate the disconnect between the ideal and the reality of socialist Yugoslavia. This book offers an analysis of the three music movements and their particular brand of 'poetics of the present' in order to explore the movements' specific forms of socio-cultural engagement with Yugoslavia's 'new socialist culture' and demonstrate that their cultural praxis was oriented towards the goal of realizing the genuine Yugoslav socialist-humanist community 'in the true measure of man'. Thus, the book's principal argument is that the driving force behind the music of commitment was, although critical, a fundamentally constructive disposition towards the progressive ideal of socialist Yugoslavia.

On their way home from a boring college party, African American college students Tracey and Janet come across a terrible scene. Members of a traditionally white fraternity have severely beaten two African American freshmen basketball players. Disturbed and upset by the incident, Tracey discovers that one of the athletes was on a date with a white cheerleader at the party. Was the assault racially motivated? Tracey turns to her friend Terrance, the president of an African American organization on campus, for his help and advice. To her surprise, Terrance discounts her theory and tells her not to bother pursuing action against the fraternity. Tracey refuses to let the act go unpunished. After organizing a student protest to shake things up, she's gratified to see it earn coverage from the local press. But she's suddenly catapulted into the national spotlight when the names of two well-known politicians' sons end up in the headlines of the story. With the increasingly tense situation fast growing out of control, Tracey has to make some hard decisions that may affect not only the athletes but the entire campus.

As the authors say: Shake ‘Em Up is “for People Who Fling Parties, People Who Go to Parties . . . People Who Don’t Really Drink but Feel That a Cocktail or Two Enlivens Conversation—in short, for the American People,” and that’s as true today as it was upon the book’s original publication, “in the twelfth year of Volstead, 1930.” Virginia Elliott and Phil D. Stong created a handbook for polite—if not entirely legal—drinking during the height of Prohibition, but the advice remains sound, the voice charming, and the cocktails strong. Whether you’re looking for the proper way to mix a Brandy Punch, what you ought to serve alongside a Bijou Cocktail, or a dependable hangover cure, Shake ‘Em Up has you covered. Need advice on how to catch up with your already-inebriated guests, or guidance on what to do when said guests end up a little too inebriated? Here, too, Shake ‘Em Up will point you in the right direction. Looking for a step-by-step guide to making bathtub gin? Well, sadly, that page has been censored by the United States District Attorney for the Southern District of New York. An essential addition to the library of any cocktailians, entertainers, nostalgics, or those who just like to relax with a cold beverage, Shake ‘Em Up delivers all the joy of a Jazz-Age cocktail party, without the fear of temperance officers knocking down your door.

The farm crisis of the 1980s quickly became a media event, with scenes depicted starkly in black and white on color TV. The embattled farmers, accompanied by their advocates, stood holding off bankers and sheriffs wielding foreclosure notices. In this new book, using findings from interviews and participant observation, agricultural historian Mark Friedberger peels away the emotion and rhetoric of the "save the family farm" movement to provide a realistic picture of what happened in on important farm state. Shake-out: Iowa Farm Families in the 1980s depicts the farm crisis of the 1980s in all its complexity, providing a useful corrective to popular accounts. Friedberger's approach and his focus on individuals present the problem in America's heartland at a truly grass roots level. Those seeking a better understanding of American agriculture in the 1980s and of rural life generally will find it invaluable.

Shake the World contains the distilled biblical guidance that will take the believer from ground zero to victory in the war against sin. In the military we have more doctrine then any officer could read in a twenty-year career. Army doctrine comes in the form of Army Regulations, Technical Manuals, and Field Manuals. It is the Field Manuals that have something we can actually use when an unseen enemy surprises our position. Shake the World is pragmatic and honest, based on the absolute authority of God's Word. The Lord gave us three standing orders: Love God completely, love others as yourself, and prepare the way of the Lord. The time has come. Cpt. Corban led teen boys in Jesus' Special Operations Cell (J.S.O.C.) as a youth pastor, using this book as a lesson plan. He has been a Probation Officer in New York City, in Family and Criminal Courts. He has been a Federal Corrections Officer in the sections housing the worst offenders, and saw the difference one Christian Soldier makes. His military career has spanned the ranks from private to captain, and has covered the globe. He has been married 19 years, and is the humble father of four boys and three girls from 17 years to 7 months. He has known the face of the enemy - in poverty and abundance, war and peace, health and disease, at home and abroad, in scores of cultures. His hope is that he has stumbled across the right words to enlist your help in Shaking the World through radical obedience to God. The author can be reached at, and soon through his website (currently under construction).
