Whispers of Hope, The Story of My Life, is a compelling narrative detailing the life of a young girl born in the deep south during the Jim Crow era. Her tale includes her realization that to make a better life for herself and others, she must run away from the struggles of her young life and go headlong into a world about which she knows nothing. Bertie Simmons eventually finds her way to Houston where she serves successfully for 58 years in many leadership positions within a large urban school district. Her career included experiences as a teacher, elementary school principal, assistant superintendent, district superintendent, and high school principal. Whispers of Hope allows the reader to witness the painfully slow process of integration and introduces the heroes who demonstrated the courage to fight for equity in education. Bertie Simmons' journey includes numerous awards and recognitions such as being named HEB's Best High School Principal in Texas award in 2011 and KHOU's Spirit of Texas award. In addition, Furr was one of only three schools in the nation identified for the College Board Inspiration Award in 2011. The story culminates with her adventures and challenges as the principal in a "throwaway" high school labeled "a pipeline to prison" and a "drop-out factory." The reader learns of her seventeen-year tenure at Furr High School and her innovative approach to building a culture of community and student success that leads to the school receiving the XQ ten-million-dollar grant from Laurene Powell Jobs in 2016 to rethink high schools. Known as a visionary and a change agent who brought out the best in her students, the high-energy educator arrived at Furr High School at 6:30 a.m. each school day. Bertie Simmons guides us through the painful experience of having her dreams dashed, and yet, she emerges with a strong commitment to spreading hope across the landscape. Bertie Simmons emerges strong and valiant.

She has traveled down paths which most would not dare; from the horror of losing two children within two years, to the shadowy journey through cocaine addiction and rehab, and being diagnosed with cancer. Though she was robbed of her children, stripped of her sobriety, and subject to a disease that necessitated a double mastectomy, Zoleka Mandela is not a victim. She is a survivor, and her story serves as testimony to the strength of the human spirit in fighting against life’s challenges. Zoleka is a living example of success in spite of overwhelming challenges. She is now clean and cancer-free; she had her last session of chemotherapy in April 2013, and has been sober for 36 months. Through her story, it is impossible not to have faith in the good things in life, and possible to believe that anything is achievable.

When life unravels, where do you turn? Sonya Grace Naugle wrote Whispers of God's Love when she was at her lowest. After a tumultuous childhood followed by many years of emotionally and physically taxing cares as a pastor's wife, mother of four, and long-distance caregiver for her parents, she collapsed and became almost totally incapacitated for nine months. During this season she was brought face to face with a multitude of thoughts--past hurts, present anxieties, and fears about the future. In her discouragement, God spoke to her heart, slowly bringing truth, healing, and hope. The God of the Bible is the God of today. If we learn to listen for His voice, we will gain a deeper understanding of His love--a love that says, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Heb. 13:5). This forty-day devotional, written from the perspective of God the Father speaking to His child, is an invitation for you to sit for a while and listen for the Father's voice in the midst of your daily challenges and pressing needs. Through Whispers of God's Love, let God restore hope to your heart and lift your troubled soul in the midst of life's trying times.

I was always fascinated with words and their colorful meanings. The origins of my creative journey of writing poetry began when I was eight. Family and close friends encouraged me to write. My parents were gifted poets so I attribute my enthusiasm in writing to them. My mother Oleata especially loved to recite poetry that she had learned or written in her youth. Her melodic voice and use of pitch and prosody were fascinating and captivating. One of her favorite pastimes was to read the Bible aloud which kept us in awe with the unique way she would make the words come alive! Although she always wanted to write a book, it never materialized in her lifetime. Throughout the years she infused the passion of poetry into my soul. About five years ago after my mother passed away, I decided to revisit my poems, carefully stored in manila folders and resume writing. Gradually I was able to work through the grief and isolation of losing the primary source of my inspiration and my reason for evolving into who I am. Whispers of Hope was born out of my need to express the joys, pain, situations, and the apprehensions we face daily. Whispers of Hope is a literary vehicle which transformed me as I wrote it. It is my desire that this book will bring healing, joy, and peace to the readers and that you too, will discover inner strength and renewal as you reflect upon your life and how you influence others. It is a gift which took decades to write and I hope the readers will inhale the heartfelt messages and exhale while they rethink their lives! Iva Smith lives with her husband Greg and two daughters in Virginia.

For fans of historical novels by Kristin Harmel and Martha Hall Kelly comes a “gripping tale by a writer at the top of her game” (Fiona Davis, author of The Chelsea Girls) following three friends who struggle to remain loyal as one of them is threatened with internment by the British government at the start of World War II. In August of 1939, as Britain watches the headlines in fear of another devastating war with Germany, three childhood companions must choose between friendship and country. Erstwhile socialite Nora is determined to find her place in the Home Office’s Air Raid Precautions Department, matchmaker Hazel tries to mask two closely guarded secrets with irrepressible optimism, and German expat Marie worries that she and her family might face imprisonment in an internment camp if war is declared. When Germany invades Poland and tensions on the home front rise, Marie is labeled an enemy alien, and the three friends find themselves fighting together to keep her free at any cost. Featuring Julia Kelly’s signature “intricate, tender, and convincing” (Publishers Weekly) prose, The Whispers of War is a moving and unforgettable tale of the power of friendship and womanhood in the midst of conflict.
